Volunteer Opportunities

Please note: If you are a young woman aged 10-18 and are interested in being a Teen Volunteer at Ophelia's Place, click here to check out the volunteer opportunities listed in the "for girls" section of our website.

Ophelia's Place is now in the process of recruiting and selecting adult direct service volunteers once a year. Qualified candidates will bring with them a strong awareness of girls' and women’s issues, excellent listening skills, flexibility, empathy, good personal boundaries and a commitment to social change. Experience working with girls is preferred.

If selected as direct service volunteers or interns, applicants must be able to commit to regular volunteer hours (3-6 hours per week) for a full school year, beginning in the Fall of the 2010 school year and continuing through June 2011/end of the school year.

Ophelia's Place provides all selected applicants with a 20-hour training on our philosophies, protocol and relevant curricula, and provides ongoing bi-weekly supervision and support. The first segment of Volunteer Training will be held Sept. 16/17, and the second portion will be held Sept. 23/24.

Typical Volunteer Roles may include: (but are not limited to!)

  • Community Outreach: co-presenting with staff about Ophelia’s Place programs and services
  • School Presentations: Co-presenting with staff to groups of teen students on Healthy Relationships, Peers As Allies, Media & Body Image and other topics
  • Providing on-site office support answering phones, helping us get caught up on administrative tasks, and greeting the public at our busy drop-in center.
  • Support Group Facilitators: Co-facilitating weekly girls’ support groups in local middle and high schools
  • Special Events: Support staff with offering fun and empowering activities to girls in our community and at Ophelia’s Place
  • Public Relations & Media Support: helping us get the word out about fun special events and activities
