Drop-In Resource Services

Ophelia’s Place offers a welcoming, safe environment for girls to drop-in Monday through Friday between 12 – 6 pm where they have an opportunity to share and support one another and strengthen peer relationships.  A young woman can talk with a caring adult who will listen respectfully and offer the resources and guidance for her to work toward her own solutions.

Ophelia's Place has lots of girls' resource books, art supplies and healthy snacks to enjoy. We also have 2 youth computers available for girls to use to create and print documents, do homework, update their resume, check e-mail, and/or do research.

Ophelia’s maintains a current database of community resources and referral options for girls and parents of girls.  Staff help girls to advocate for their own needs and to connect with social or recreational opportunities.  Ophelia’s also has a great library of books, magazines, hand-outs, videos, and access to safe web-sites with computers on-site. These services enhance the lives of adolescents with positive opportunities and experiences which can reduce the likelihood and magnitude of problems sometimes associated with this age.

Professional Counseling

Ophelia’s Place provides professional, individual counseling to girls ages 10-18 using a strength-based, goal-oriented approach.  Our therapists understand the needs of a girl within a cultural and social context, and focus on her personal strengths, not weaknesses or disorders, and help her to identify and achieve goals that are meaningful to her.  Counseling services are provided to all girls regardless of income level or ability to pay.

Support Groups

Ophelia’s Place offers several weekly groups that support positive socio-emotional development.  These groups are lead by our therapists who are skilled in assessing and responding to the needs of girls.  Ophelia’s offers groups that focus on building skills such as communication, assertiveness, expression of feelings, coping, relationship rights, self-care and safety.  Some groups may focus on specific needs, such as girls who are healing from violence or abuse.

Support for Mothers

A girl needs adults in her life who will be allies and who will help her develop a sense of purpose with self-confidence in her own capabilities.  Because a girl’s greatest ally is often her mother, Ophelia’s Place offers services to moms which help support this important relationship.

We don’t provide individual counseling with adults, but we will meet with a mother (or other caring adult) to orient her to the services offered to girls at Ophelia’s and to help her strategize how she can support her daughter.  We provide referrals for adults to community counseling services such as Looking Glass or private family therapists.

We also offer “Mothers as Allies” (“Madres como Aliades”), our weekly moms group that focuses on the challenges and strategies in parenting girls.  The workshop is facilitated by a therapist and uses a very interactive style with video clips, hand-outs, role playing and a homework assignment where moms get to apply new skills.  The goal is to help a mother become an effective ally to her daughter. These popular groups meet for six weeks in English followed by six weeks in Spanish.
